Few misc. questions on open-site  Reply with quote

First, my apologies if I'm posting in the wrong forum for these questions/comments, but this appears to be the "right" place.

I'm wandering over here from ODP thanx mostly due to efforts/encouragement from icurite and lafiaguy who seem pretty persuasive. So I've spent a little bit of time browing stuff and looks interesting. My questions/comments.

1. Is it just me, or is www.open-site.org pretty dang slow ... it seems to take 5-10 seconds (or more) to browse through the categories. I've noticed this for the last few days, so probably not transient, just curious what the scoop is. BTW, the forums are noticeable snappier.

2. I noticed "copyright 2002" as the footer - you guys probably want to change this to 2002-2004.

3. I see the "Hosted by JVDS.com" on the footer's - just curious what the relationship is with those guys?

4. So I thought about submitting some of my yummy BBQ Recipes - pls see http://www.komar.org/bbq/bbq_grill_recipes/ - would this be appropriate content for open-site and if so, it looks like it would be placed somewhere under Home/Cooking/Recipes ... but I don't see a seperate BBQ category ... or I could just put under "B" for BBQ or "S" for Shrimp.

I'm considering applying to be an editor, but am waiting for see ALL of 101 reasons from icurite Wink

Thanx,
alek

P.S. I made both the sweet and spicy BBQ Shrimp listed at the above URL two days for the bazillionenth time and I can still highly recommend it - it's actually slightly easier/better doing a stir-fry.

alek

1. Yes, Open-Site is rather slow at the moment. We're hoping to fix that soon!

2. What page did you see it? Categories are without years and the homepage has been updated.

3. Get someone else to answer that...

4. You could probably just submit it to Home/Cooking/Recipes if it is not copyrighted. It should be moved to the appropriate category if/when it gets published.

5. I'm getting there... But I'm going to spread it out with daily or 5-times-a-week installments, as long as I actually get onto the internet.

Hey, are you the one that likes green... Question

Very Happy Cheers, icurite.

1. Thanx - don't mean to sound too impatient, but it really feels doggy right now.

2. Ummmmm ... I thought I saw it on the sub-pages, but I don't see any YYYY there now, so maybe it was just the top-page. Regardless, it's now fixed.

4. You guys iike content more than links, so I'm assuming I should just pick a recipe and send it in (?) Would also be a good test/exposure of the system to me.

alek

P.S. BTW, what's this I hear about dinosaurs showing up in webcam's near volcano's down in your neck of the woods?!? Wink

Hulk is does like GREEN ... see my ODP profile

Hi there!

We're an encyclopedia, so we don't normally bother with links. We like good, original encyclopedia-like content! It's best not to take content from other websites without permission (especially when there might be copyright restrictions).

Anyway, I thought that you might like to apply for this category:

Arts/Comics/Titles/Hulk/

Very Happy

Think I heard something about it... what happened exactly?

(We seem to hear more Australian and American news than local news round here.)

Hulk appreciate Puny Human lufiaguy [is rather cool] suggesting category.
Hulk certainly logical choice to write about Hulk!
Hulk say "roger" on good original content.
Hulk SMASH spammers who violate copyrights.

Hulk read that Puny Human icurite say doggy slowness should be fixed soon.
Hulk like to know when that happen and then Hulk consider OEP.
But Hulk very busy with other things likes SPASHING spammers.

Hulk get chuckle out of Puny Human devans comments.
Hulk think he get inside joke on metas.
Hulk hope metas can laugh at it too.
Hulk say humor is a good thing.

P.S. Hulk still puzzled on significance of JVDS.com link on bottom of OEP pages.

Submitted BBQ Shrimp Recipes to Home/Cooking/Recipes ...  Reply with quote

OK - I did a submission to Home/Cooking/Recipes as recommended by icurite

I was going to just submit as one, but thought that it might be confusing have "sweet and spicy", so I made 'em seperate - feel free to combine if you want. A few feedback comments if you guys are interested:

1. I selected "Recipes" for Type of Item (this was pretty clear). At the bottom of this screen (and subsequent others), I saw the copyright 2002 I was talking about originally.

2. The screen that pops up has all sort of stuff like fat/cholesterol/sodium/etc. A good idea, but at least in my case, I have no idea what these are - I just know these shrimp are darn good tasting! I'm assuming that these are optional categories (I didn't see 'em elsewhere) so you might mention that.

3. There is a "Picture" box, and I wasn't sure what you want there, so I just stuffed the URL from my website for lack of better things. I don't know how this is used - should I provide a link to a JPEG so you can upload to your server and reference that way?

4. I know you say "optional" on the Email address ... but consistant with what I wrote above, you might tell me what you want this for - I assume it's to let me know how my submission went (?)

5. I basically just cut-n-pasted the recipe from my web site, which I think is relatively hype-free ... again, edit as you see fit.

Hope that's helpful feedback and pls let me know publically or privately how the submission is. If it was really bad (or good), you can suggest I apply to be the editor of Home/Cooking/Recipes so I have to format/clean-up my own submission! Wink

alek

P.S. I am still thinking about editing in OEP and I appreciate the Arts/Comics/Titles/Hulk/ suggestion by lafiaguy - most appropriate for The Hulkster Wink

Re: Few misc. questions on open-site  Reply with quote

Have circled back the last few days to see if any updates, but haven't seen any so far ... but just tried surfing to www.open-site.org to see again if maybe the "Shrimp Stuff" made it ... but have gotten a "connection refused" for a while now ... maybe the upgrade for quicker speed is happening ... I hope! Wink

jvds.com appears up (they are your hosting company per the link on the bottom of your pages?) ... so maybe just open-site.org (obviousely open-site-talk is working).

Just curious what's up - thanx.

alek

There are certain times of the day when Open Site slows down a lot. It seems to be working at the moment though. Very Happy

By the way, Open Site Talk is hosted elsewhere to Open Site. Very Happy

1. I have contacted mjflick about this. Thank you.

2. If unsure about a field, you may leave it out.

3. The picture field is for editors to insert the URL of a picture they have uploaded to OEP. Unfortunately, the upload picture tool doesn't currently work.

4. You may place your email address in the submission, but it will not be published and we typically will not reply regarding your submission. Your email address, if provided, will be deleted once the submission is published.

5. Only submit if the content is copyright-free or you have permission to use the copyright. Since it is from your website, it might be a good idea to state that you have copyright permission in a submission and from whom, even be it yourself.

6. Your submission seemed fine and it will be published soon. Thank you for your contribution. If you'd like to be editor of the category, feel free to apply. You will really enjoy the editing tools and the experience, I promise!

Sorry for taking a while to reply but I've had other things on my mind. Thank you for your patience.

Re: Few misc. questions on open-site  Reply with quote

OK - thanx for the update - a few responses:

2. My comment/suggestion on this was that you might want to tweek the page a bit so this is more clear to submitters - apologies if I missed where that was said.

5. I think (?) I mentioned in the recipe submissions that they came from my web site, so feel free to tweek that as appropriate for you guys.

6. I took your advise and the Hulkster submitted an application for the Hulk category. As noted on it, if you accept it, you can add "If the Hulk can edit, you can to!" to your 101 Reasons to your 101 Reasons for Editing at Open-Site. Wink I also have a few ideas on how to flesh out the Cooking category, so we'll see how my application goes and let me know if you want me to take a look over there too.

No problem on the delay and I hope I didn't sound like the "whiners" over in resource-zone.com who pester the ODP editors - just thought I might have dropped between the cracks.

BTW, the response of open-site.org is MUCH MUCH faster - nice job guys!

alek
