Getting People to Join  Reply with quote

Until we get linked to at Open Site, it might be hard getting some members to join us. Has anyone got any ideas that will get the forum some exposure?

I think chirone mentioned something about posting on outside forums. Places like WebmasterWorld? Confused

Is there even a link for this forum on the OEP? If so, I haven't stumbled upon it yet. If not, then that's one way of adding more exposure to this forum.

Yeah, I put that link there. It would be much better if it was on every category page.

I didn't really know where else to put it.

I've written a page about this forum on Wikipedia, so hopefully we'll get some attention from there... but we really need a link on the category pages... Confused

Chris,

I found a new site that is a directory for forums. Here's the submission link:

http://www.forum-finder.com/links.php?action=reclink&cat=0

--------------------

Here's another forum directory:

http://www.forum-search.com/

--------------------

If you tell me what text you want to submit, I'd be glad to take care of it. Although you might want to look at their submission forms first, so you know the format that they accept.

--------------------

In addition I made a post in the Penguin Cafe on DMOZ asking them what would be the best DMOZ category to submit this forum to. You can see it here:

http://forums.dmoz.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=907126

Robert. Smile

How about something like:
The public forum for Open Site, an open content encyclopedia. Aims to provide a channel of communication between editors and members of the public.

Thanks for the thread at the ODP (but it would be better if they linked to http://open-site-talk.org/ rather than http://open-site-talk.org/phpBB2/index.php ). Very Happy

And congrats on your promotion! Surprised

Chris,

I just submitted the following description to the two forum directories:

quote:

The Open Site Public Forum

The public forum for The Open Site Project, an open content online encyclopedia. Provides a channel of communication between Open Site editors and members of the public.

I'll let you know when one or the other submission has been validated and therefore made public.

Re: The link in the DMOZ forum thread.

Fixed it! Very Happy

Thanks.

A link to the public forum might be good on the new front page that's being designed! Very Happy

Re: Getting People to Join  Reply with quote

I hope this suggestion is taken the right way, but I started a another forum thread where I asked a few questions, but never really got closure on 'em.

I realize everyone is busy and don't "expect" closure/answers, but my experience in "recruiting" has been that timely answers (even if the answer is NO) is better than no answer.

I also noted some instability/unreachability/slowness of both open-site and open-site-talk ... while downtime happens, the impression might be that this isn't quite ready for prime-time yet.

Just offering some constructive feedback to 'ya,
alek

What problems have you seen specifically with the Open Site Talk forum hulkster? What would be most helpful is if you could tell me what time of day it occurred?

Thanks.

Re: Getting People to Join  Reply with quote

Actually, you commented about the unreachability of open-site.org in the referenced post above! Wink

I know you asked about open-site-talk.org and I know that is different than open-site.org (that's fairly clear from the attributions at the bottom) ... but I remember recently trying to access open-site-talk recently and getting "connection refused" several times - sorry, I didn't write down the time/day.

open-site-talk is actually pretty darn snappy (whereas open-site is still pretty doggy) - I wish the ODP forums were this quick.

Hope my two cents on the stability/speed are more clear now (and helpful). Still curious to hear feedback on the questions/suggestions I made in that other thread - again, my experience has been you encourage involvement by answering/engaging people - the title of the thread is "Getting People to Join" Wink

Just trying to be helpful ...
alek

And your help is definitely appreciated.

I'm monitoring the forum performance situation closely and I'm pretty close to moving things to another host if I hear of any more problems.

Please let me know immediately if you have any further problems.

Thanks.

We have 35 members now - it would be nice to have more, but hey!

I'm thinking about changing the posting permissions so that guests can also post - it might generate more interest. Smile
