Citations  Reply with quote

In almost every case scientific entries will rely at least partly on published material. As I could not find a standard for citing external (conventional and electronic) information sources like journal articles, books or online documents in OEP, I would like to inspire a discussion about this important topic. For sake of consistency we should agree on a uniform citation style, if needed on two styles for humanities and natural sciences.

[This is a continuation of the OEP-internal thread http://open-site.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=science;action=display;num=1088374213;start=0#item0]

Re: Citations  Reply with quote

A first suggestion could consist in adopting a simple Author-Date style for printed publications and the CGOS (Columbia Guide to Online Style) for online material.

Author-Date is defined as:

Citation: (Author Year)

Generic: Author (Year). Title|. Secondary Title|. Secondary Author|. Place Published|, Publisher|. Volume|: Pages|.

Journal Article: Author (Year). “Title.” Journal| Volume|(Issue)|: Pages|.

Book: Author (Year). Title|. City|, Publisher|.

Edited Book: Editor, Ed.^Eds. (Year). Title|. Series Title|. City|, Publisher|.

Conference Proceedings: Author (Year of Conference). Title|. Conference Name|, Conference Location|, Publisher|.

Book Section: Author (Year). Title|. Book Title|. Editor|. City|, Publisher|. Volume|: Pages|.

For the CGOS see http://www.columbia.edu/cu/cup/cgos/.

The way I was first taught and find most practical:

Author(s) in the format of Surname, Christian Name, Title, Section/Article title if applicable, Publisher, Location, Date Published. [Available/accessed at (if applicable) URL/Name of Library/Name of School Faculty or Department Resource Room/Retailer].

There are different citation styles for humanities and natural sciences. Eric's style seems to be better suitable for humanities while author-date is the usual format in natural sciences and medicine.
