Should Grocery Stores Diversify?  Reply with quote

Many supermarkets include several specialty departments that offer the products and services of seafood stores, bakeries, delicatessens, pharmacies, or florist shops. Household goods, health and beauty care items, automotive supplies, pet products, greeting cards, and clothing also are among the growing range of nonfood items sold.

Some of the largest supermarkets even house cafeterias or food courts, and a few feature convenience stores. In addition, grocery stores may offer basic banking services and automatic teller machines, postal services, onsite film processing, drycleaning; video rentals, and catering services.

Should grocery stores diversify to non-traditional products?

Do you believe that grocery stores can provide sufficient service for service-intensive retailing, such as pharmacies where professional medical advice is essential and may not be of as high quality as specialist retailers? Do you enjoy the convenience offered by diversified grocery stores and do you believe it is beneficial to you as a consumer?

My opinion:

From the consumer's perspective, the extra convenience and reduced prices appears beneficial. From the perspective of the small business owner, I can understand it being quite a threat. Big companies are always thought of as lacking the personal, communual, considerate attitude that many small businesses offer. One only needs to look at the strong anti-Wal Mart movement in the United States to be aware of that.

It has good and bad points. The good points being the convenience to you and me the consumer. The bad points are that not necesarily local shops finding it hard but our farmers are too.The farmers are producing the produce which you and I want, but not in the quantities needed by the supermarkets who inturn find the produce abroad.
The gov should step in and make it compulsary for all supermarkets to purchase 90% of fresh produce from the UK supply chain.

Our national economy in New Zealand relies ripping off the British farmers. Embarassed I can certainly see your point.
