Soap operas are bad for your brain cells Shocked . The worst kind of television programming in my opinion. I guess many love them as a pass time, but I just can not relate to spending so many hours watching what seems to be the same dramas over and over again.

I agree. I find the prime time youth soaps - Shortland Street (NZ); Home and Away (Australia); Neighbours (Australia) and The O.C. (United States) to be utter crap. From what I have been told, The O.C. is a useless 40-minute sex-hour in desperation for ratings. What I do like is some clever drama, like Joan of Arcadia (USA) and Midsomer Murders (UK) to sink my teeth into.

But here in New Zealand there is a huge following for Coronation Street.
There was controversy when EastEnders was moved to Prime, which, like BBC2 in the UK, is not available to VHF viewers.
Viewers get upset when Coro Street changes time or night, or is missed one night for September 11 coverage, so there was obviously a lot of controversy around Prime's attempt to buy it. It was predicted many elderly would get depressed and some might commit suicide, so the NZ Government increased its funding of the programme so TVNZ could keep it.
