I'd go for Latham. Can't forgive Howard for that refugee, children-overboard, war with Iraq, staying on until he's old and wrinkled, trying to impress America at the cost of Australia rubbish. We get free-to-air live coverage of the American, Australian and Kiwi national elections, and the Aussie and Kiwi elections get prime time coverage.

I don't mean to be a walking billboard, but if you get Foxtel Digital installed you can get 24-hour coverage on Sky News's interactive election channel. Hear political reporters who wish they could get a job with the real networks blab on about an AC Nielson poll that shows some slight change from the News Poll... sounds fascinating. (He quickly switches channel to Cartoon Network to watch Australia's election for kids, then turns to Disney to discover Studio Disney has changed from Aussie presenters to new Aussie presenters, then to the History Channel which has an Australian documentary, then to some mad AFL final live from MCG then desperately to an Aussie reality show which has an ad break full of messages from Australian-owned superstores like Bunnings and Harvey Norman.)

No, you're right. He treats everyone with loving human respect. Well, except refugees, Iraqis, people who don't like confusing GST laws, homosexuals, Saddam Hussein, Australian soldiers, Mark Latham...

While Latham loses, Howard the ancient antique accepts victory.

At the same time Hubbard produces an Auckland mayoral victory as sweet as his cereal and Redman reaps rewards from advertising attempts with Hamilton mayoralty. Wellington's mayor renews responsibility for a second term, while Garry Moore makes mayoralty once more in Christchurch and Invercargil's Tim Shadbolt smiles at success.

As someone said Australians do not like bullies. Labor also needs a few policies that have a chance of working and an interest in helping businesses to make jobs. Anyhow be interesting to see if Latham makes it to the next election or will the factions knock him off.

What's this crap about oldies - guess what, one day some punk will be calling you old and you will not like it one little bit! Twisted Evil

My grandmother is 95 years old and loves Steinlager beer and coffee at cafes, so I know that age doesn't matter that much. But for someone who's 65 years old and been in the job as long as most of people in the school system have been alive, isn't it time for a fresh new face. They say that Peter Costello will replace him in two or three years.

I can see why Latham didn't win. He didn't have a good hand on foreign affairs with the USA, Britain and New Zealand. He approached the Tasmanian forestry issue from the green perspective without actually gaining green support and loosing other support. However, he certainly is a good politician, although perhaps not a leader.

The initial reaction in New Zealand at Howard's victory was surprise at how someone with his record of lying, war-making and refugee-abuse could make it to another term. Our surpise is probably reflected by the fact that at 10:30pm (7:30pm Eastern) our New Zealand coverage began with a warning that the program could go on for several hours until a result could be predicted, while Sky News Australia's coverage had already predicted Howard as the victor.
