What are your favorite verses from the Holy Bible? Which ones do you think are inspirational, fascinating or revealing? Which provide the best messages about how we should live?

1 Samuel, Chapter 16, Verse 7  Reply with quote

"But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart."

Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3, Verses 1-8  Reply with quote

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace."

It's still my favorite:

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." John3:16

Such love!

Very Happy

And God Bless all of those who do not know of that love. It is so nice to know that God is there to look after every single one of us, especially those suffering under the powerful Sumatra earthquake and South Asian tsunami.

Why wasn't Jesus a daughter, why a son? If Mary had other children were they also a God's representative on earth?

There was a really interesting discussion recently in a local newspaper about what everyone's vision of 'eternal life' was and the beauty of it is that everyone had a different view. Must see if I can find it. It is fascinating to examine religous people's view of this world and how there needs to be more after they leave.

Could have an infinite debate about what happens to the quantum energy in a human's body at death (ahh ... nothing) and if there is a soul what actually is this unmeasurable life force that will contain all the data currently stored in the brain's neurons. Maybe heaven has a massive knowledge base that stores all our thoughts and personality and allows our spirit / soul to regenerate these on arrival so we can remember our selves (hell would also need one I suppose).

Sorry, I am just feeling a little existential these days after many decades of church life and questioning many of the easily said comments of followers. I actually believe the story's about Jesus Christ of Nazareth passed down by his revolutionary followers (all men!) form a valuable set of guides for human interaction however misused by many disturbed clergy since then.

What about the poor little kid stolen probably for sex or a snuff film after having had both parents and family washed away? This is one tough, punishing God you guys play with - but no one will ever ever know. I hope you are right but there is not much evidence apart from this thing called faith.

What I was taught was that Jesus was male because at that time in history and in that society males dominated and had he been in a female, people probably wouldn't have paid any attention to him.

If there is no God, how do you explain life. There is one very interesting book that sort of pokes fun at atheists. In atheist and non-religious philosophy, life and the world around us just formed themselves, so under the same philosophy a car wouldn't need to be manufactured because it would just form itself.

What is there to explain? Which particular part? Maybe a new thread would be more appropriate as I don't like offending those who live with their faith. (Hey they might be right!)

It is one thing to acknowledge there is a God but it is quite another to assume we have any understanding of its nature. I have passed through the blind faith stage and the more I read and study the more understandable life on Earth becomes YET there are huge questions that remain. Some great questions like why are we made from matter not antimatter? Why does every human amino acid have an isomer which doesn't work? Why if the Earth had been a few kilometers further from or closer to the sun would life as we know it would not exist? Do the rules of probability allow for only one 'human' life form in the universe?

Interesting stuff! Can't see the relationship though to Jesus of Nazareth though?

I think you are partly right there. We cannot possibly understand our Almighty God, so that is the very reason why we must think of God in a form we can interpret - as our Holy Father who gave his only son for the forgiveness of our sins. Really, no human words or worship will possibly express his love for us and our quite improbable existence. That is no reason not to use words and worships to express how we feel about it.

It is faith that tells me I live on a ball-shaped planet and not a flat planet.

The North Island of New Zealand and VIC/QLD in Australia are the only places I've ever visited in my life, so it is my faith that tells me that the rest of the world exists.

It is my faith that tells me there are other living things around me and that my senses are really showing me the world around me.

It is faith that tells me I exist.

It is with that faith that I believe.
