The Great Race is taking place on the Waikato River here in Hamilton, New Zealand on Septemeber 4th. For further information see the official website.
The Great Race is an annual event involving Cambridge University, Oxford University and Waikato Univeristy rowing teams. Waikato take on either Cambridge and Oxford, alternating each year.
In 2002 Waikato beat Cambridge due to a "fatal tactical error early in the race" as Rob Hamill (Trans Atlantic winner and America's Cup yachtsman) put it. In 2003 Waikato saw a close victory over Oxford.
This race is a build-up to the real thing between Cambridge Unversity and Oxford University. But that doesn't stop there from being some competition. Who do you think will win?Related Category:
Well, Cambridge won! They lost 2002 and Oxford lost 2003.
But it wasn't really fair - two of our Waikato rowers had just got back from the Olympics so the team really hadn't had time to train.Related Category:
