Rugby at the Olympics? I think it doesn't really fit it - the same with tennis. Rugby is a professional sport with its own world cup, whereas athletics (or track and field as the Americans have decided to start calling it) has Olympics as its main world championship event.

If they did introduce rugby, it would put Australia even further up the medal tally you just posted. Rugby sevens was also suggested and would give Pacific Islands countries an opportunity. However, we already have the world tour of Sevens that is mostly won by New Zealand and sometimes by Fiji.

Re: Olympics  Reply with quote

It takes an extreme amount of focus and drive to train many years to reach a the olympics. While winning a medal is good, the real reward is pushing ones self beyond personal limitation. Everyone participating in the olympics has already won. Many atheletes try very hard, and do not make it to that level.

In response to rugby having its own world cup...Soccer has its own world cup event every year and yet no one disputes that soccer is a valid olympic sport. Just because a sport has a "world type" competition on a yearly basis does not mean it shouldn't be a sport in the olympic
