Australia/NZ/Oceania  Reply with quote

Calling all Aussies, Kiwis and Pacific Islanders... This is OUR thread to discuss OUR ISSUES.

From federal politics to network television and Russell Crowe to rugby, this thread is for anything Oceanian. You can even discuss Richmond AFL Club's high penalty rate or express your support or opposition to the controversial Eddie McGuire's statements on the AFL Footy Show.

Nine Network  Reply with quote

I thought I'd start it with a rant about the Nine Network, the largest Australian television network, with affiliate stations across basically every reach of Australia, most parts of New Zealand and also in Papua New Guinea.

Here in the Waikato, the filming location of Hobbiton, we are very upset at the Nine Network for taking away our very high-rating local news bulletin on our local Prime Television station. Instead, it has been replaced with a national New Zealand news bulletin produced in Sydney by some former New Zealanders at Sky News Australia.

Why is it that the Today show has an unusual obsession with Sydney, Auckland and Melbourne. Why do they continue to provide weather forecasts for centres such as Dunedin that have a much smaller population that Hamilton, Waikato's main centre.

Nine National News promises a trusted news service covering the day's news and weather, but why bother broadcasting in New Zealand if you can't even mention us in a bulletin, even for the weather?

Fans of the Australia-New Zealand edition of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? will note that most contestants are from Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland and Brisbane. We kiwis have got to $250,000 and $500,000 so many times, yet most are from Auckland and got on because of an admitted New Zealand bias in the selection of contestants (to get some people watching in the land of the long white cloud).

Don't even get me started Jame Durie's pronounciation of 'Kia Ora' in the special New Zealand introductions and conclusions of The Block, which has huge billboards on the side of high-rise buildings in central Auckland, because we kiwis are so obsessed with Australia that we can't get enough.

Please don't tell me that the appointment of Charlotte Dawson as New Zealand reporter for Getaway is for anyone but the highly profitable Auckland urban market that Kerry Packer wants to soak up. After all, Suzy Aiken left the New Zealand presenting role of the Australian travel series years ago to... present national New Zealand news in Sydney with a news service that doesn't even have reporters in New Zealand after Nine Network fired them all.

On "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" you mean? Surprised
I always miss it, because the television is on UKTV every evening between 7:30pm and 8:30pm for The Bill. I only get to see the last 5 minutes after that. Crying or Very sad

How long did it take for Eddie McGuire to say it? I bet he stretched his words and had a ad break first. Wink Typical Nine Network.

devans, as I've already said in another thread, I don't really care for Big Brother. Wink I think television can't get more rubbishy that a group of Australians doing nothing in a small house which is oddly placed in the middle of the most exciting theme park in Australia. Wink Comedy Inc. were accurate when they ridiculed the boredom and total lack of events in the household. Wink And there must be a reason why they stopped having a New Zealand introduction after the first year. Wink

lufiaguy [is rather cool], we are the most obsessed non-British country in the world for The Bill. Old episodes starting from the pilot last year have been playing every weeknight on UKTV New Zealand, while new episodes a couple of years behind have been playing three times a week non-stop for several years. It also plays on ABC in Australia, but they are well ahead of us.

One of my favourite story lines was the Cathy Bradford one. The ending to that was fantastic! (And she appeared again in another episode a few weeks after.) Very Happy

We have our own Big Brother in the UK (I think it started here). We're on Big Brother 5, and it is rubbish! They chose a group of people that they knew would clash. There was a riot one night (the police got involved), and two housemates made love under a table!

What's happening with the Queensland floods devans? Apparently Pacific Fair is partly submerged in water. Shocked

For those that aren't familiar with the southern hemisphere, Pacific Fair is a shopping centre (mall in USA) that used to be the largest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere for a while and the Queensland floods have just moved from the biggest to second-biggest story downunder (after the poisoned Mars and Snickers chocolate bars and the total recall of all Master Foods chocolate bars).

Anyway, my prayers are with the Queensland flood victims. Crying or Very sad

Australia is still here, unmoving, watching and waiting for its turn at the big time - unfortunately we are getting drier so I dont think we are going to grow for a while. We need another 5 or 6 billion people but hey they need to drink water and that's a problem.

(Oh yeah did I say Big Brother is on again! Twisted Evil Well at least it stopped me playing Everquest!)

Big Brother may be absorbing the Network Ten schedule, but here in New Zealand it rated so low last year that it has moved to midday. I can't see a bunch of Aussies on camera beating Dr Phil, but then again I'm probably wrong.

I prefer Australian Idol and New Zealand Idol. American Idol is pretty good as well, but they had to move that out of prime time as well because it simply doesn't rate like the downunder versions.

A new show, funded almost entirely with the help of the New Zealand Government and Kerry Packer, is finally airing 18 months after it was supposed to start. "The Tem Show" is hosted by Temuera Morrison.
