I have played EverQuest and several other role-playing games.
Currently I enjoy Runescape for its simplicity. With EQ the game could easily become your life. That is why it is affectionately called Evercrack by players and the quote: "sleep is optional" is the mantra of many players.
I enjoyed playing it a lot, had several high level toons that were twinked and who I actually have attachment like I would a friend because of all the time and effort put into developing the character, and honing his or her abilities.
In EQ you choose one specialty, Wizard, Ranger, Warrior Pali, Necro, Mage, Cleric... and the best fighting happens in groups of players, each of whom know their toons unique abilities. The warrior is the meat shield, the cleric heals all, the enchanter helps the cleric heal mana and enchants monsters while the ranger locates them, pulls, and kites them. The Mages rely on their pets and wizards nuke the bad guys with an array of great spells.
It’s very difficult to get through some levels as certain toons without playing in a group. One bad group member can get you all killed and lose experience points. (bad)
In Runescape you do not lose experience (that's good) but you lose your stuff. Except for your three best items and that sucks! It is easier to grasp this game and play it. EQ has soooo many options and combos, and abilities, and armors, and weapons, and lands, and monsters, and special abilities, that you can spend years mastering it. But then...so what!
It is supposed to be a game, a pastime, something to supplement someone who already has a life. Rune scape is geared more toward those of us who "play" games, not have them take over our lives.
I still like to play EQ occasionally, but when I have both screens open in front of me on two different computers, I find myself drawn to Runescape
and wind up closing EQ in favor of my Runescape toon.
One thing I do not like about Runescape is the whole "noobie" concept.
In EQ high-level players almost always help lower level players. They give gifts often, noone begs. In Runescape half the population are obnoxious beggars, who annoy the higher level players and are called noobies by them. The whole (stealing, lying, scamming, begging, name calling) crap gets really annoying. In EQ the ratio of kind people to assholes were 90% good folk. In Runescape I would have to say it is reversed. Anywhere you go there is bickering over rocks, begging, cussing in clever ways AZZHOOLE, etc. Scammers and liers abound. One guy asked my son to follow him to the wilderness to see a cool place to hunt, then killed him and robbed him.
Real nice game for a young kid to play huh?
Game wise I enjoy playing Runescape. Player wise, there are things the developers could do to ease the desperate and annoying attitudes that prevail like make more coal beds, incentives for people to work together in this game.
